Case Study: Chloe Shutt

We spoke to one of our wonderful and talented ex-students Chloe Shutt to find out how her training with The D Project set her up for her dancing career!

I was introduced to contemporary dance by Debbie Harbin when I was spotted in primary school to be a part of a Foundation Training Programme in Darlington from the ages of 8 to 11. From there my love for contemporary dance has continued to grow and I have since been a part of Dance City’s Centre of Advanced Training from 2011-2018 and taken a Level 3 Extended Diploma in BTEC Dance. Now I am working towards a in a BA (Hons) in Professional Dance, gaining skills in Cunningham, Graham and Release based techniques, teaching within the community, studying management and the history and development of contemporary dance. During my studies over the past 10 years I have had experiences of performing in annual shows at Dance City after working with various choreographers such as; Neville Campbell, Joss Arnott, Kevin Turner and Anna Watkins and also have performed with the balletLORENT

as part of their young cast in their production Rapunzel in North East Venues. In October 2019 I had the opportunity to dance with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures as part of the 6 young cast members selected to be a part of the production Romeo & Juliet at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal.

The D Project has given me the opportunity to start out a teaching career as an aspiring professional under the mentor-ship of Debbie herself. Enabling me to learn on the job has enhanced my skills, which I have also been able to transfer into my studies, giving first hand experiences of teaching a range of age groups and abilities.

I hope to build connections with local schools and professionals to continue my journey from the platform The D Project has given me to start my teaching career.
